6-year-old. investigators are not calling this an amber alert but they do believe the child is with a noncuss toadial parent and may have left the city. she was last seen the night of thursday, january 31 in the 2000 block of e street in northeast. she was wearing purple pants, jacket and silver boots. if you can help or have any information, call d.c. police 202-727-9099. an investigation is under way into the cause of a blaze that injured five firefighters in baltimore. about 100 firefighters responded to the scene on pennsylvania avenue when the building became unstable, the call went out to evacuate. firefighters were in the process of leaving the three- story brick building when it collapsed. the five injured firefighters are all expected to recover. the building housed a lumber company and this morning it is all charred rubble. arlington county police are looking for four men after a smash and grab at a jewelry

store and the subsequent robbery. surveillance video shows the men entering the zales at pentagon mall yesterday at 11:00 in the morning. they used hammers to smash the display cases inside the store and all four men grabbed jewelry and took off. the value of the stolen jewels $128,000. if you have any information, please call arlington county police. it is 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> jessica doyle is here. wall street didn't look so good yesterday. >> sometimes you can't fight gravity. stocks go up. stocks can go down. that's what we saw with triple digit losses yesterday. you can blame concerns about europe. that was the latest but really what's going on here, we had this mottest sell-off after the best january since 1997. checking the numbers, the dow stands this morning back below 14,000 but not too far below after sliding 129 points. the nasdaq was off by 47 points and the s&p 500 was down by 17.

the u.s. government plans to file a civil lawsuit against the ratings agency standard and poors. this goes back to the 2008 financial crisis. is accuses s&p giving high ratings to risky mortgage bonds that led to the crisis over four years ago n. would mark the federal government's first legal action against a major ratings agency over the mortgage debacle. s&p denies any wrongdoing and says this lawsuit is without merit. when is the last time you bought a dell computer? that's one of the problems michael dell is wrestling with and part of the reason why he's close to finishing a risky $23 billion deal to take his company private. "the wall street journal" says dell was in talks last night with microsoft and private equity firms to fund a deal. it would give shareholders about 25% more than the stock is worth right now. dell is trying to remake itself in an era when the pc is no longer king. >> does dell have -- maybe they

welcome back. 5:09 on this tuesday morning. chilly out there. we have a few 20s, low 30s. partly cloudy skies. perhaps a few flurries tonight. low 50s south. only the low 40s places like frederick over toward winchester. back with your seven-day forecast in five minutes. right now monika with timesaver traffic. turning out to be a pretty terrific tuesday. no problems to report on the beltway here. near new hampshire avenue leaving the 95 interchange right into silver spring and all of your major thoroughfares into the beltway coming in from upper montgomery county look great as well. back with more in a few. here's a look at what's new this morning. the little boy at the center of a six-day standoff in alabama is safe today. f.b.i. agents say they stormed the underground bunker when the suspect started acting more irrationally. agents shot and killed 65-year- old jimmy lee dykes and rescued young ethan who was taken to the hospital just as a

precaution. the horrible explosion in mexico's pmex oil company was caused by a gas buildup. most of deaths and serious injuries happened when the building collapsed. it's an idea that's been floated around here for years but condition today got to it first. our neighbors to the north are now facing -- phasing out the penny coin. canadian pennies are being collected to melted down. purchases will be rounded up or down to the nearest five cents. the good news is we're getting warmer. >> but howard has some rain messing up the forecast. messing up the forecast. we'll join this is dylan right , this is dylan, and this is his big brother hayden. dylan's only five, but he's already been through two surgeries for brain tumors. and he just went through his second round of chemo. and this is their mother, dawn, who runs this loving and happy home. she too struggled with tumors. but that doesn't slow her down.

with partly to mostly cloudy skies and variable winds about 5 miles an hour or so. so we won't have that biting wind to deal with, although tomorrow is going to be breezier. a system came through overnight. hit the mountains. winter storm warnings have been dropped in garrett county. you can see a little bit of snow from eastern pennsylvania through metro new york and connecticut this morning. some showers trying to reach the ground southeast of us although the air very, very dry. it's cold to the north. low 20s in williamsport, new york. we have 40s from richmond and norfolk and roanoke this morning all above the 40-degree mark. outside on our michael & son weather camera, showing the u.s. capitol building. temperature in town 35 with calm winds, mostly cloudy skies. the dew point 26 giving us a relative humidity of 70%. we're not too cold except places like buffalo. at would on the edge -- on the

wa on the edge -- ottawa on the edge of it. 6 below zero. 58 in dallas. warmer time over the next few daitz with the clouds still moving generally west to east across the country. we do have another little clipper coming across wisconsin this morning toward northwestern illinois. this could produce a few flurries around here late today, tonight. looks like that will be passing to our north. when clippers pass to our north, they don't do much for us. you'll notice this one that came through. had a tough time dropping much east of the mountains. so on the futurecast, we'll look at this scoot quickly to the east. we stay with partly to mostly cloudy skies today, highs in the mid-40s. tonight is not going to be too bad. partly cloudy. could be more snow showers in the mountains, especially tonight. we'll see temperatures dropping into the 30s. some 20s north and west. then tomorrow the sunshine returns. it will be a breezy day with temperatures back in the mid- 40s. even thursday looks about the same but by friday, that's going to be our next chance of

good monk. welcome -- good morning. welcome back to wusa9 on this tuesday morning. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. mr. bernstein, how are you? >> we do have some school delays. grant, hampshire, morgan and pendleton in west virginia two- hour delays and allegany and glare yet in maryland two-hour delays. they had snow in the mountains. we did not. skiing pretty good if you can get out there. take advantage of it while we've got the cold around. weather wise, we've got a chilly start. we're in the 30s with a few upper 20s. we will see highs today in the mid-40s in town. we're going to make a run toward 50, 34r5euss -- places like fredricksburg and culpeper but the low 40s is what we're going to do -- fredricksburg, culpeper, excuse me. frederick will only be in the low 40s to our north. this is a system we're watching scoot east through new york and hartford now headed toward providence.

over to route 50, coming in on route 50 looks good as well from annapolis. no issues to report right now. back to the maps, this time heading in from the west. looking good on 66. a few brake lights maybe as you leave manassas to centreville but that's about t. one more last live look outside, this time heading on to northbound 395 in shirlington and the 14th street bridge. all lanes are open, no delays. one maryland road is about to get a little faster. the maryland transportation authority has announced plans to increase the speed limit on the intercounty connector from 55 to 60 miles an hour. drivers say 55 is just too slow on a brand new road with so little traffic. that's an understatement. the mta says a study found the road can handle the increased speed limit and should take effect by the end of next month. back to you guys. >> all right, monika. three tenth grade boys are back in class despite facing child pornography charges. >> the teens go to west springfield high school. they're accused of making some

sex videos with six girls from several schools. police say they learned about these videos in december and they conducted a month-long investigation. >> on january 11, we arrested three west springfield high school student, all three boys, two 16 and one 15. each charged with reproduction, distribution, solicitation and facilitation of child pornography. >> several students and parents told wusa9 that these guys are attending class as usual. the fairfax county school board member says they were not made aware of the charges till last friday. now the system can only a disciplinary hearing on the students alleged behavior. this evening a fund-raiser will be held for the survivors of last week's deadly hours fire in miersville, maryland. two of the four daughters died in the blaze that destroyed the family's home on highland avenue. the parents and two surviving girls are grieving and they're

homeless. the chik-fil-a owner -- you a awed. as well as donating -- [ inaudible ] -- as well as donating profits to the family. police are investigating an overnight armed robbery near the university of maryland. the female student told officers she was walking just after midnight when a masked man approached her at paint branch parkway and rhode island avenue. he showed her a gun and demanded money. police gave the all clear after determining the suspect took off from the area. today the baltimore ravens will celebrate their super bowl xlvii championship with the purple nation. >> baltimore is throwing a ravens parade. it runs from city hall to m&t bank stadium and starts at 10:45 this morning. if you can't make it to the charm city, we will be streaming it live on wusa9.com and then tonight, 7:30, don't miss our special game on: purple reign. delia goncalves has more on the

fest iforts. she joins us -- festivities. she joins us from the satellite center. >> reporter: good morning. the coach told reporters last night that the win finally felt real when they landed in baltimore and saw the sea of fans who were all there to greet them and welcome them home. let's take a look at some video of their arrival yesterday. players were greeted as superstars as they got off the plan at bwi. when the line of coach buses pulled up, dozens of fans cheered their arrival but the ravens qb was not on that bus. joe flacco had a busy couple of days. stopped by disney world and stopped by david letterman with the audience greeted him with a standing ovation. >> earlier in the year when i wasn't signing what they wanted me to sign he said listen, when the time comes, you can come and beat on my desk. i said all right, i'll take you up on that.

today is the 10th safer internet day encowrning all of us to -- encouraging us all to be more cautious. joining us is dan,. he is up early in san fran. thanks so much for joining us. i want to tell you, my stepdad just got hacked. he's in his 70s. i know hacking is bad, viruses are bad but how bad is it out there? >> well, of course it's something that affects many, many people. my father had to deal with something recently too where he was concerned that his e-mail had been hacked. so this is -- it's something people have to think about on a regular basis. so for us on safer internet day, it's about creating an awareness, talking to different companies and of course people who use the internet and really instilling this idea of being vigilant and coming up with lots of tips and tools they can use along the way. >> we've all gotten a lot more

savvy about this kind of stuff in recent years because of the viruses and things happening to our parents and ourselves. but what are some warning signs that cybercriminals could be targeting us that we may not even realize? >> it's generally a rule of thumb if you think something is suspicious, then it probably is but your computer could be running a bit slow. you could get strange pop-up screens coming up. all of this is an indication you could possibly have some sort of bad software running in your computer. it's never too late of course to try to run some antivirus software, get all of that off there. one of the things we talked about is being preventive with this. we launched our good to know website. we have tons of tips to think about a stronger, more secure password, not sharing that with anybody, avoiding these kind of scams you can come across online and really just thinking about this every day and sort of making it part of your routine. >> thank you so much for giving us these tips. this is fantastic.

norfolk. still 41 in fredricksburg last check. here in d.c., we've got partly cloudy skies. a temperature of 35. another good thing about today, no wind this morning. so you don't have that biting windchill. the humidity, though, is 70%. so the air is kind of dry. that's one of the reasons yesterday when the snow showers were coming across the mountains, they just never really made it down to the ground. there's some arctic air in eastern canada nosing down toward northern new england. there's for push of real arctic air into the state. for the next several days, even the next week or so, we look seasonable if not above seasonable temperatures running in the mid-40s. you can follow the clouds which are generally moving west to southeast across the country. when they're moving like that that zonal flow, well, things move fast. we've had a lot of little stels. you don't -- little systems. you don't generally get anything too big. the real cold gets stuck up in canada. our next weather maker, trying to be our next weather maker

looking at you, it is hard to believe that when she was in eighth grade, you weighed 300 pounds. >> yes, i did. >> you say it wasn't just 300 pounds. it was even more than that. >> it was 307. this was on a 5'2" body frame. >> my goodness. what was the trigger? what caused such weight gain for you? >> i became a food addict. i looked to food as a means of coping when i lost two cousins that i was very close to. they were like sisters, in a car accident. food was my drug that i looked to for coping. that's where i reached over 300 pounds on the scale. >> you find there is some sort of trigger like that, an emotional loss or some sort of trauma that does trigger it but we never think of it as happening in someone so young as you in eighth grade. >> yes. >> but what was the turning point that went from 307 pounds to what we see here today? >> i didn't really have a -- really have my aha moment till in my 20s. i felt like my weight was a big

speed bump my entire life. i didn't have the guy friends, wasn't able to shop at the cute places. i said i'm tired of being heavy. i'm ready to lose weight and i'll going to do this. >> you did this ten years ago. >> yes. >> she's maintained this beautiful frame. what are some misconceptions people have about gaining and then losing weight that contributes to staying off ten years. >> i think my first advice is any diet that sounds too good to be true is usually is. weight loss has to be a slow and consistent process. one thing that's really important is you need to be consistent with both the diet and exercise. there's no magic pill. there's no magic drink. it has to be a hundred percent diet, exercise, a lot of bad hair days, and it's really worth the sacrifice. that's how you keep it off. >> did you do it on your own or have a program to help you a nutritionist to help you? because we said you ate to lose all of this weight. >> right. i didn't do any commercialized weight loss programs or anything like that i went to see my family doctor.

his advice to me was you have these dark blotches on your skin. that's an indication that you're prediabetic. i want you to start eating like a diabetic patient and i eliminated all white floods from my diet. that means flour, sugar, pasta. just by walking every day, i started to see results pretty quickly. >> what are you working on right now? >> i'm taking myself to the next level and working with celebrity fitness mark jenkins and i'm working on a series of dinners called conversations with care line. you'll be able to come and have dinner and ask me additional questions. two restaurants have signed on. >> you definitely want to do that and again the book is called "half my size: how i ate to lose 150 pounds." carolyn, a pleasure meeting you and congratulations. >> thank you so much. >> what heck of a goal. thank you. perhaps not so good if you're trying to lose weight.
